Are Your Symptoms Affecting Your Quality Of Life?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection therapy utilises concentrated platelets from a patient’s own blood to promote healing. The procedure involves drawing blood, processing it to isolate the platelet-rich plasma, and then injecting this concentrated solution into the injured area. PRP contains growth factors that may help tissue repair and regeneration, making it a treatment option for various musculoskeletal conditions, including tendon injuries, osteoarthritis, and muscle injuries.
The following conditions may benefit from PRP injections as part of a comprehensive treatment approach.
PRP injections offer several potential advantages for patients seeking treatment for musculoskeletal conditions.
A thorough assessment will determine if PRP treatment is suitable for your condition. This evaluation includes reviewing your medical history and current medications, and examining the affected area to ensure PRP is an appropriate option.
Basic blood work may be recommended before the procedure. These tests help evaluate platelet count and overall blood health to ensure optimal PRP preparation.
Certain medications, such as blood thinners, anti-inflammatory drugs, and corticosteroids, should be temporarily discontinued before treatment. Follow specific instructions regarding the timing of medication adjustments to maximise treatment effectiveness.
Hydration is recommended in the days before your appointment to facilitate blood collection. Arrive well-hydrated and having eaten a normal meal to help minimise any potential lightheadedness during blood collection.
A small amount of blood (typically 15-60 ml) is drawn from your arm using standard venipuncture techniques. This is similar to having blood drawn for routine testing and takes only a few minutes.
The collected blood is placed in a centrifuge machine that spins at high speeds to separate blood components. This process isolates the platelet-rich plasma from other blood elements and typically takes about 15 minutes.
The area to be treated is cleaned with an antiseptic solution. Local anaesthetic may be applied to minimise discomfort during the injection.
The concentrated PRP is injected into the specific treatment area using precision techniques. Ultrasound guidance may be employed for accurate placement of the solution into the targeted tissue.
After injection, the site may be bandaged if necessary. Basic care instructions are provided, and you’ll be monitored briefly before being cleared to leave the facility.

The injection site should be kept clean and dry for 48 hours following the procedure. Apply ice packs intermittently if swelling occurs, and elevate the treated area when resting.
Light activities can typically be resumed within 24-48 hours, but strenuous exercise involving the treated area should be avoided for 1-2 weeks. Follow specific guidance based on your condition and treatment location.
A review appointment will be scheduled to assess your response to treatment. Some conditions may benefit from a series of injections spaced several weeks apart for optimal results.
PRP injection therapy may cause temporary pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site. Some patients experience a brief increase in inflammation as part of the healing response. Infection is a possible but uncommon complication, with proper sterile technique minimising this risk. Individuals may respond differently to treatment, with some experiencing more significant benefits than others. Rarely, nerve injuries or tissue damage can occur during the injection process.

Initial improvement may begin within 2-6 weeks after injection. The biological healing process continues over several months as the growth factors work to stimulate tissue repair.
Treatment plans vary by condition and individual response. Some patients benefit from a single injection, while others may require a series of 2-3 injections spaced approximately 4-6 weeks apart.
PRP may not be recommended for patients with certain blood disorders, platelet dysfunction, active infections, or cancer. A thorough medical evaluation will determine eligibility.
